Tricks, Treats & Sweets

This past weekend it was time once again to spend several days in Texas with the adorable Miss Butterfly & Miss Doodlebug and their parents. I arrived on Friday evening (after the girls were in bed) and by the time the I left on Tuesday evening had enjoyed several days filled with tricks, treats and sweets.

The Tricks – Isn’t it amazing what sticks & strings can become? This Halloween I used sticks to trick yarn into 2 Halloween costumes. Last Thursday I decided that I needed to bring a costume for the family Halloween party on Sunday evening. On Ravelry I had seen the Candy Corn Hat & had the colors in my stash of Sugar’n Cream dishcloth cotton – so Thursday evening I cast on for the hat. The hat was a very fast & easy knit – most of the knitting was done at the airport on Friday afternoon. As I was finishing up the hat on Saturday afternoon the girls were sitting on each side of me watching the stitches & giggled when I put a big candy corn on my head.

Super Sweet
1 Candy Corn Hat + 1 Superman t-shirt = Super Sweet!

The 2nd string trick turned out to be the hit of the party. On Friday Matt decided he wanted to be a lion for the party because the girls love when he “roars” at them. Maya was stumped about how to do that costume on short notice. A trip to Hobby Lobby on Saturday morning yielded the ingredients for a yarn mane. On Saturday afternoon while the girls were napping I started to map out the mane and decided the best thing would be to knit a hat & attach the ears & mane to that. I cast on some stitches & made it up as a went along. Sunday morning the girls jumped on my bed to watch me knit and “helped” with the knitting and sewing (pulling yarn out of the skein). By Sunday afternoon we had a pretty cool mane (a skull cap, 2 knit ears & lots of loops of yarns) – I think I will write up this “pattern” & post it in the near future. Add a fur boa for a tail, some fur “scrunchies” at the wrist, paint on a nose & whiskers & soon you have a lion. The girls loved their daddy as a lion – they dubbed him the Lion King of Texas.

The Lion King of Texas

Another trick that had great reviews – the purple & orange finger jello that I made for the party & that we also took to the preschool party. The “magic” of 3 small boxes of jello + 4 packets of knox gelatin + 4 cups of boiling water never ceases to amaze kids & adults.

The Treats & Sweets – It is always a treat to spend time with these sweet girls – there were so many fun little moments as we were hanging out at home or out and about that just made me smile.

On Saturday evening we went out for dinner – at the last minute the girls decided that they wanted to dress up in dresses & high heels – they were so proud of their outfits and tried to act so grown up.

Dressed for Dinner

Home highlights – swinging on the swings, watching Disney’s Robinhood – their continuous giggling during the archery contest scene was contagious, reading lots of stories, doing crafts, sitting on the bathroom counter while I did my makeup so I could powder their noses.

Milkshake Gals

On Monday afternoon we made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. In 2005 it was “too hot” on our visit (in the 90s) and in 2006 it was “too cold” on our visit – this year was “just right.” Both girls were pretty adventureous with feeding the assorted animals. On the hayride we saw some turtles sunning themselves on a rock. Of course we took pictures in front of the “How Tall This Fall” scarecrow (taller & taller) and picked out some pumpkins to take home.

On Tuesday morning we dropped off Tinkerbell and Witchy Woo at preschool. Maya & I enjoyed a few hours of “big girl time” with some shopping & sushi before going to the school for the Halloween parade & classroom parties.

Too quickly it was time to come back home to Chicago. It truly is a treat to spend time with the girls.

Silver and Gold

A frequently quoted song reminds us to:

Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
And the other is gold.

The last couple of weeks have been filled with both.

The middle of this month was a golden friendship trip – 5 days in Dallas with my dear friend Maya & the ever adorable Miss Butterfly & Miss Doodlebug. (It was an all girls weekend because their Dad was out of town.) After a winter wrapped in hats and scarves it was great to spend the weekend in sandals and capris. Even though both little ones had a bit of a stomach bug we had a fun weekend.

Dallas Blooms

On Friday we packed a picnic & headed to The Dallas Arboretum where the spring blooms were in full effect – the full spectrum of color was in abundance.

Kids Concert

There was a fun lunchtime concert with 2 great children’s entertainers: Aunty E & Joe McDermott – several times throughout the weekend we were singing snippets of their fun songs.

The weekend was filled with lots of play time, lots of swing time (higher M’Amy, higher!), lots of reading, lots of snuggles and so much fun. On Saturday evening Maya & I escaped for a few hours of “big girl” time – after 2 1/2 hours we emerged from Nordstrom Rack (with lots of great things for both of us) and then enjoyed an excellent dinner at a newer Vietnamese place, Zander’s House.

Last Thursday evening was a serendipity trip that turned into a silver friendship trip. On Wednesday I saw that Kate Jacobs was going to be in the Milwaukee area on Thursday for a “The Friday Night Knitting Club” book reading event. Since I wrote my review of the book, Kate and I have been emailing back and forth so I was hoping to meet her. Since I was home in Chicago, I was able to drive up for the evening. Because the event was “last minute” there was a smaller crowd than hoped for; however, it was still a fun evening. After the event was over, Kate & I kept the conversation going over tea & coffee at the book shop cafe before I dropped her at her hotel and then came back home. Kate it was great to hang out with you – hope to see you in Chicago!

Amy & Kate

My sister flies in this evening for a 4 day visit & I’m taking a couple of days off while she is here. Tomorrow is a day trip over to our favorite Michigan lakefront area with a friend and the rest of the time will be filled with all sorts of sister fun!

How Tall This Fall?

When Miss Butterfly lived in Chicago, we had a fall tradition of going to Didier Farms to get pumpkins and apples. We would also pose Miss Butterfly in front of the cute “How Tall This Fall?” giant pumpkin growth chart. When the family moved to Texas last year we all agreed that the annual pumpkin patch visits must continue. My first visit to their new home in Dallas was last Oct. and on a 90 degree day we went to a pumpkin patch.

This year it worked out that my project in Chattanooga wrapped up and allowed for some vacation time to head to Texas to hang out with Miss Butterfly & Miss Doodlebug. The 6 day visit was full of parties, fun adventures and just hanging out at home.

Dallas Highlights

Our first adventure was the annual trek to the pumpkin patch. As we drove to the farm, the weather turned cold and when we parked in the field it was pretty close to bitter. Thankfully we had lots of layers for the girls but it was a quick trip through the farm. We quickly fed the animals, posed for some pictures (including “how tall”), went on the hayride and picked up some pumpkins.

The adventures continued throughout the trip. On Saturday we had 2 Halloween parties. Miss Butterfly was the cutest ladybug ever and Miss Doodlebug was the cutest little pink flower. Sunday was time with both sets of grandparents and a bit of shopping. Monday was preschool and the Halloween parade and classroom party. Monday evening we had an early birthday celebration for me – Miss Butterfly helped her mom make the yummy lava cakes. Tuesday was ballet and then a trip to the carousel at a local mall and lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. It was Miss Doodlebug’s first time sitting in a booster seat & she had to do everything that Miss Butterfly did. Halloween evening was bustling…the girls went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood and also helped hand out candy to trick-or-treaters at the house. Miss Butterfly even went to the “scary” houses and was a brave little ladybug – the next day she said the scariest house was her favorite.

When not “on the go” we had lots of play time at home – dress up, art time and of course reading stories. Both girls love to read! When I was in Chattanooga I picked up a cute book for Miss Butterfly that highlighted some of the Scenic City attractionsPardon Me is that the Chattanooga Choo-Choo? by Ellen Eady. I gave her the book on Friday morning & I think by the time I left we had read it at least 20 times. I had a secret knitting project with me & one evening I pulled it out to work on – as soon as Miss Butterfly saw it she said “knitting like Grosi” and had to sit next to me while I knit. A couple of times throughout my visit she would “help” me knit by holding the ball of yarn. Each time I asked what we were knitting she would gleefully should out “A xxx for yyy!” (can’t spoil the secret) Another new favorite thing to do became tumbling on M’Amy – Miss Butterfly discovered that she could do a somersault up my legs & that was just too much fun.

Before I knew it my time in Dallas was done and it was time to come back to Chicago. Between my travels this fall I seem to have missed most of the “fall like” temperatures – it has been quite chilly back here, although there is a possibility of Indian Summer later this week! I’m getting into the routine of working downtown and being home. Since I’ve been back from Dallas my knitting “bug” has returned & my hands have been constantly busy – yeah!

Beyond Dishcloths & a bit of Butterfly time

A lot of my knitting recently has been dishcloth sized because it is relatively small & simple – so perfect for travel. Since I was home this week I was able to work on some larger projects…finished one that has been on the needles, started 2 more, started & finished another.

One (+ One) Skein Felted Clutch/Tote

Felted Clutch

This is a cross between the The clutch you’ll never give up and The Felted Striped Tote from One Skein. I used less than 1 skein of Cascade 220 & 1 skein of Lornas Laces Glory (I think it was Mixed Berries). I knew that I wouldn’t have enough of Glory for the entire bag so I stopped it a couple of rows before the self handles.

This was my first felting project & was a lot of fun – both on the needles & in the finishing. It went through the hot cycle twice in a pillowcase with an old pair of jeans. I didn’t capture any before pictures but the 2nd cycle was definitely needed to get this down to a good size. Once it finishes drying it needs a bit of a fuzzcut before it is ready to go.

I don’t know who will end up with this – while I’m not a pink person there are several pink ladies with birthdays in the coming months.

Hook ‘Em Horns

When I first saw this colorway I knew that it was destined to be a knit for Miss Butterfly – both of her parents are UT alums. I “whipped up” this poncho in just a couple of hours this week (actually twice, I ended up frogging the first one because I didn’t like how it ended). I’ve had the yarn for several months but since Miss Butterfly was in town I thought it would be great to give it to her in person instead of mailing it to her. Here are some shots of her modeling it when she was here for a “Sleepover at M’Amy’s House” (more details down below).

Hook 'Em Horns

Project Details: Based on the Kiddie Capelet. My modifications – for increases I did yarn overs; I used the following needle sizes: 9, 10, 10 1/2, 13, 15, 17; I didn’t do the ruffle at the bottom. Yarn is Hill Country Yarns Instant Gratification Superwash Sock Yarn in Hook ‘Em Horns.

I loved working with this yarn – it was so soft & so easy to work with, I will definitely be using it again! I already have 2 other colorways in my stash & love all of the colorways that they offer.

Wrap it Up!

Heather Wrap

On July 1st I actually cast on for a purple knit project during Project Spectrum purple month. This is the “Superlong Wrap” from Knitting to Go. I’m using some Jaeger Matchmaker in Heather. This isn’t as bulky of a yarn as the pattern calls for but I am wanting a lighter wrap. I don’t know if this wrap will stay with me or be gifted but I’m enjoying working on it. It is a very simple pattern that knits up beautifully.

Cozy Babies

Blue Blankie

I’ve got 2 baby boys to knit blankets for in the coming months. I’ve started on one blanket using “new to me” yarns – Wendy Peter Pan Double Knit in Lupin Blue & Polka Dot. This is a very soft yarn that is turning into a cozy blanket.

Two co-workers are expecting babies in August & September so I think I will try the Mason Dixon bib pattern as a quick knit gift for them.

Baby Knit

This is the start of an MDK bib that will go to another new baby with a matching onesie – I think it will be a “go to” gift to knit as needed.

Butterfly time

Miss Butterfly & Miss Doodlebug and their parents were visiting Chicago this week so I had fun spending time with them. On July 4th we went to the annual BBQ in their old neighborhood. It was a beautiful day for a picnic & we all had a great time.

July 4th Fun

I took Thursday as a vacation day & had fun with the girls. We met for lunch at our favorite Pita Inn. After lunch Maya & Miss Doodlebug left for naptime & Miss Butterfly came with me for an afternoon of play and a sleepover.

Our afternoon was spent at the Kohl Children’s Museum up in Glenview. What a great museum! We had so much fun with all the exhibits – we stayed there for over 3 hours. Here are some of the highlights of the afternoon.

Museum Fun

As we were walking to the car Miss Butterfly said “I had such a fun time with you today.” I would definitely agree! After the museum we planned to go for our favorite Bubble Tea as a special treat. Within about 2 minutes in the car Miss Butterfly was on her way to a power nap so we went for the new smoothie from the Dunkin Donuts drive thru instead.

Sleepy Butterfly

Our evening consisted of watching our favorite DVD, Mary Poppins, and reading Babar the King. Since she couldn’t bring her sleeping bag on the plane we made a little nest of pillows, blankets & stuffed animals for her.

Butterfly Knitting

This morning before it was time to leave Miss Butterfly found my knitting basket & the baby blanket that is on the needles. She wanted “to knit” so she sat on my lap & put her hands on the needles as I knit a row. Then she did some “knitting” on her own & said she was knitting a blanket for her new baby cousin. Her Grosi is a great knitter so maybe one day she will be clicking the sticks “for real.”

Knitting and time with the girls…just a couple more ingredients for a lovely week!

Easter, Etc…

Easter Weekend!

I spent the weekend in Dallas with close friends who moved from Chicago last fall. They have 2 adorable daughters that will be known in this blog as “Miss Butterfly” (my adorable 34 mo. old goddaughter) & her little sister, “Miss Mouse.” The weekend was a lovely blend of “on the go activities” & just hanging out at home – the perfect anecdote to a stressful week at work.

Dallas Arboretum
On Friday “the girls” ventured to the Dallas Arboretum to enjoy the beautiful flowers & take some pictures of the little girls. It was a lovely day to enjoy a picnic on the main lawn after taking pictures of the girls. (Notice the handknit, an Amy Artisan blanket, that the girls are sitting on.)

Girls in the Garden
We were not the only ones with photo plans for the day – many families were there taking pictures & we saw at least 12 brides having portraits done & 2 girls taking quinceanera portraits – Miss Butterfly called each of them Cinderella. There was a piano player by the main lawn so Miss Butterfly had a fun time dancing & twirling to the music. As Miss Butterfly & I wandered around while Miss Mouse was being fed we managed to get a good self portrait of the two of us. (see below)

M'Amy & Butterfly

On Saturday after Miss Mouse’s morning nap the girls headed to McKinney for a bit of shopping and lunch. With two girls in strollers we didn’t wander through too many shops; however, we enjoyed a yummy lunch at Spoon’s Cafe. We anticipate future visits to McKinney to visit more of the cute shops.

Easter Girls

Sunday was a whirlwind day: Early service & pancake breakfast at church; opening Easter baskets; taking the requisite Easter pictures (above); Easter dinner with family & friends in Lewisville – 16 adults & 4 kids made for a fun afternoon. Even in the 90+ degree weather the Easter Egg hunt was a lot of fun – the adults had fun hiding the eggs & then watching the oldest 3 hunt for them. One dozen confetti eggs also added to the fun. As we left all the girls/ladies were given lovely spring mini-bouquets that included roses from the hostess’ garden – I managed to get the bouquet home to Chicago without any damage. The flight home was a bit delayed – but that did nothing to lessen the fun weekend in the Big D.

In addition to these snapshot moments from the weekend there were so many other fun times with Miss Butterfly & Miss Mouse – the countless smiles from them both, storytimes, playtimes & just the joy that is both of them. And of course, catching up with Maya & Matt – including lovely dinners on the patio while enjoy yummy grill creations (tuna one night & pizza the next). While I don’t have another trip booked yet I can’t wait until the next time I see them all!

Etc…

Thanks to everyone for your leaving your Ramona (& Beverly Cleary) memories on my last blog entry. On Sunday’s flight back to Chicago a little girl (about 8 years ago) in the row behind me was reading Ralph S. Mouse the entire time. I just had to smile at seeing BC in action.

I’ve mentioned previously that I enjoy knitting for others – baby blankets have been the most frequently gifted item in recent years. Last Thursday I had another “joy of knitting” experience in the form of a voice mail & phone conversation from my vice president at work. His daughter was the recipient of the grape & mint “Baby Maggie” blanket. Unknowingly I had made her blanket in her nursery colors so the blanket has been used from the start. Now that Maggie is starting to squirm more in the crib they had decided that this blanket is the perfect one to use because the “holes” in the knit mean that she can’t suffocate in it. Mike & his wife have decided that this is a “perfect” baby blanket & I should open a side business to make & sell them. I had to chuckle at the “side business” – Mike said there was no way he would let go of me at my day job but he would help me market the side business. Of course I was flattered by the compliment but I told Mike what I’ve mentioned to others before – I enjoy knitting for others for the sheer pleasure of doing it & I wonder if it (or any of my other artistic endeavors) became a job would I still find the same joy in it? (And even with the occasional stressful weeks, I really do enjoy my day job.) What are your thoughts on knitting, crafting, art for pleasure vs. making those same activities your source of livelihood?

In addition to the yellow flower pics from the Dallas Arboretum, I have Project Spectrum blooms in my front yard now. Here is one of my daffodils.
1st Daffodil

More knitting content in coming days & weeks. I continue to make progress on the lap blanket for my Aunt (must finish by next weekend), I need to start start on some other projects that won’t be discussed while in process, the felted tote needs to be picked up again & oh there are so many other projects that I want to tackle! Let’s not even talk about all the scrapbooking that I need to do!
