Going for Gold!

Now that the torch is lit in Torino and the Athletes Pledge has been delivered it is time to introduce my knitting event for the next 16 days…
(…cue the Olympic Fanfare and Theme by John Williams…)

Knitting as the torch is lit!
Steady knitting right after the torch has been lit.

The Capri Shawl from Morehouse Farms in Aqua

Good progress was made during the Opening Ceremony. By the end of the evening I was at about 50 rows. (That included 2 “issues” – 1 of which was the most delicate knit surgery that I’ve done…had to back out about 10 rows).

My friend Kristy came over to watch the ceremonies (& snap the picture!) – she didn’t have any knit projects going so she had her own Paper Olympics making Valentines as I knit. We both thought that these opening ceremonies were fabulous.

The knitting continues now while watching the US Women’s Hockey team. The rows on the shawl are still pretty short so they progress quickly – I know that will soon change but I’m pleased with the progress so far. The real challenge will be the blocking at the end – the full wet blocking is something new for me.

Why the Capri shawl? I was contemplating what to select when Lolly posted about her Morehouse Farms shawl project. As is often the case with reading blogs I followed the links from her post & loved the shawl kits. The Capri was an easy choice for my first lace shawl project – especially for these Olympics: …The Winter Olympics are in Italy…Capri is in Italy…One of my favorite stops on my Italy/Greece trip in June 2005 was Capri…the Aqua color of the yarn reminds me of the beautiful water around Capri…while the pattern may not be terribly difficult (& reminiscent of my baby blanket projects) it is a lace pattern which is a new skill…the full wet block at the end to shape the shawl is something I haven’t done in the past & I think may be a challenge (or at least a test of my patience)…

Click…click…join!

Early in my knit blog lurking days I saw someone equate reading & clicking through blogs to Alice going down the rabbit hole. There are times when I start reading blogs where one click leads to another…and another…and another…here’s an example of how all the clicking works together…

I can’t remember how I came across the link to Melissa’s dishcloths…Lolly’s recent post had a link to Whip Up…this week they had a post about Handmade valentines which had a picture & link of the same dishcloth pattern…I followed that link & discovered Natalie had made the dishcloth as part of the Monthly Dishcloth Knit-a-long. In 1997 my grandma taught me how to knit using her basic dishcloth pattern from Lily Sugar’n Cream yarn – this knit-a-long seemed like just the one for me to join. So I’ve joined up & look forward to trying new dishcloth patterns each month!

(I’ve continued to knit a few more Valentine dishcloths this week – I think a couple will stay home with me.)

With regards to another joining project…I have now joined Team Midwest in the Knitting Olympics. Fellow Midwesterners who browse my blog, check out the Team Midwest blog for details about how to join the team!

Knitting for Subtitles

Knit Valentines

This project was the perfect weekend knitting activity while waiting for the Olympics & working my way through the at home Netflix. This weekend I ended up with all foreign films at home…having to read subtitles means that the knitting can’t be too complicated. These Valentine themed dishcloths will be making their way to my Mom & sister with some coordinating dish towels.

The knit details:
Melissa’s Knit Valentine DishclothI see some of her other designs as future “quick projects” in the coming months
– Strawberry varigated Sugar n’ Cream yarn (4 dishcloths from just under 2 1/2 balls of yarn)
– Size 8 needles
– The Valentine Day’s Sheep from Katie’s Shop was the perfect accessory to mark my odd row needle.
I had originally planned to use a solid color yarn for these; however, this was the only Valentine themed Sugar n’Cream yarn at Michael’s on Friday afternoon.

The movie details…thoroughly enjoyed The Chorus/Les Choristes. Also, I “finally” saw Cinema Paradiso & loved it – as often as I’ve heard the soundtrack it seems like I would have seen the movie by now. Interestingly enough, one of the ‘old movie’ songs in the film “Anna (El negro zumbon)” has been wonderfully redone on the latest Pink Martini CD.

Baa…baa…

Baa, baa, black red, white & pink sheep have you any wool?
Yes sir! Yes sir! Three skeins full!

Knit Sheep

In today’s mail was my first set of handmade stitch markers. Katie has hung out her Pink Sheep shingle at Etsy & has some adorable sheep available for purchase.

I think that at least 2 of these little cuties will be making their debut for the Knitting Olympics. They are all posing with the yarn for my project.

Weekend Artisan

It was an all around Artisan type of weekend around here.

Saturday was a bit of “Artisan Scrapbooks”…a couple of friends came over for a Creative Memories Get Together – a fun way to spend the afternoon. After they left I had planned on working on my Italy/Greece album; however, that didn’t happen – although I did get some organizing/inventory done on all my supplies for when I’m ready to focus on pages again. Maybe I’ll spend some time on the pages while waiting for The Knitting Olympics to begin.

Saturday was also a bit of an “Artisan Cooks” day – in the morning I made some one bowl wonder brownies for dessert (1 batch was traditional chocolate with a bit of cinnamon & mini chocolate chips, 1 was Mom’s “Swedish” version that are non-chocolate). Saturday evening I made a meatloaf & scalloped potatoes for a Sunday delivery to a woman from church who is going through chemo for breast cancer. The brownies did double duty – half the batch was our goodie for the Get Together & the rest of the batch went along with the meal for Shari.

Sunday was a bit of “Artisan Knits” with a bit of Local Tourist thrown in.

As I’ve been browsing some knitting blogs in the last couple of weeks (umm…more like lurking…must leave more comments!) I have been reading about a new yarn store on the south side of Chicago. After church, my friend Jennifer & I grabbed coffee from Starbucks & then headed south to check out My Sister’s Knits. We got there before the store opened – as soon as Carol & her goldens (Cody & Goldie) opened the doors we stepped into such a charming place! After a bit of puppy love with the beautiful goldens there was a lot of “oohs” & “aahs” at everything in the store – the yarns, the needles, the books, the wide assortment of sample purses/bags. Carol was extremely helpful & offered several pattern suggestions as we looked at yarns & bags. We both could have easily picked up “one of everything” but we restrained ourselves. In the end we both picked up yarn for felted bags (my first felted project). It’s a gray day here so I’m not bothering with pictures. My bag was filled with 3 skeins of Lamb’s Pride Bulky (amethyst, blue boy & aztec turquoise) for the felted bag & a set of circular needles for the project; 2 skeins of On Line Supersocke 100 (Summer colorway #790) – I don’t know what the project will be but the colorway was to pretty to leave behind; a new Chibi; and a tin of Knitter’s Little Helper hand balm. Carol also gave us a set of felting instructions since we haven’t done it before. As we were leaving Carol pointed us in the direction of a historic neighborhood so we checked it out – lots of lovely large houses on big lots and numerous styles, including Frank Lloyd Wright – an unexpected treat! While the shop is a bit farther than “local” I definitely plan on making regular trips down there to check out yarn & get new ideas. Thanks Carol for such a welcoming visit!

(Update: Some of the mentions for My Sister’s Knits were Nancy & Christine)

I’m not sure if I’ll get started on the felted bag before the Knitting Olympics or if I’ll wait till after that event. Speaking of the “KO” I did roll 2 of the skeins of the new yarn into balls & also did a bit of a test swatch – ready for the torch to be lit and the fun to begin.

Even though it has been a gray weekend here I did manage to snap this picture yesterday morning before it got too gray. My amaryllis has all the blooms open & I’ve forced open some blooms in the stalk that broke off a couple of weeks ago (just kept the stalk in a vase of water).
